About the Program

Usually run over two semesters, IE projects give students the chance to apply the knowledge and skills they have gained throughout their degree. At the same time, they research and develop new skills while they design, develop and deliver an information system for a local business.

They experience the ambiguity and complexity that comes with developing and delivering IT solutions. At every stage, they have the support of the university environment, with academic supervisors mentoring and overseeing their progress throughout.

Developing essential skills

IE projects are team based, with students typically working in groups of four. Teams manage their project through the development stages, not only enhancing their technical skills, but also developing the essential ‘soft skills’ that are so highly regarded by employers:

  • communication
  • time management
  • developing project documentation to a professional standard
  • the ability to present work to academics and other stakeholders
  • the ability to work as part of a team
  • a capacity to deal ethically and competently with people from diverse cultures and backgrounds.

At the same time, they transition to being independent learners: all necessary skill not only for the IT profession but for all walks of life.

Quotes from clients

I was amazed at what we received after such a short while. We had small but complete parts of our system only 8 weeks after we began with the teams

Business client, 2024

Although it did seem to take up a lot of my time, I was completely satisfied with what was delivered. I understand now that his was due to the amount of time I spent with the team

Business Client, 2023

I finished up with a much better website than I had thought possible and certainly beyond anything I could have created myself, either from a cost, content or capability point of view. This will definitely contribute to my business’ success and I couldn’t be happier. The team worked cohesively and were very knowledgeable and confidence inspiring. If I want to further develop the site and even in the negotiation of maintaining the site, I have a much better understanding of briefing others on my requirements, and a good idea of the hours, effort and difficulty of changing some aspects, which is of enormous value to me.
